ABSTRACT:
Measles, caused by the measles virus (MeV), is a highly contagious viral infection associated with significant morbidity and mortality, particularly among young children. Despite the availability of effective vaccines, measles has re-emerged globally due to declining vaccination coverage and disruptions in immunization programs. Bangladesh is currently facing a major outbreak, with more than 19,000 suspected cases and 166 reported deaths since 15 March 2026, underscoring persistent immunity gaps and ongoing transmission. In the absence of specific antiviral therapy, supportive care remains the primary treatment approach, and traditional medicinal plants have long been used to relieve symptoms and support recovery. This review summarizes the scientific evidence for selected medicinal plants, including Azadirachta indica (Neem), Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi), and Andrographis paniculata (Kalmegh), highlighting their antiviral, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties, and discusses their potential role as complementary therapies alongside vaccination and standard medical care.
